This is a moniker for Nikolaev City (also known as Mykolaiv)—a major shipbuilding hub in southern Ukraine.
During the post-Soviet era, there was economic instability and a gender imbalance. This resulted in a “higher-than-average” number of Ukrainian women, many of whom were struggling to find a partner. It didn’t help that alcoholism and unemployment were prevalent among their fellow countrymen.
As a solution, they sought foreign partners overseas. Many international dating agencies then started to market their services by connecting single foreign men with women in Ukraine. Cities like Nikolaev were largely presented as places where men could find their future brides or wives.
Understandably, it seemed like an enticing opportunity for singles to explore cross-cultural relationships.
